Big Changes Coming for Westbrook Adult and Community Education

The Westbrook School Department has made it a priority to build a vibrant adult education program that meets educational and workforce needs of its adult residents. To this end, Westbrook is partnering with Gorham School Department to share a director, Kate Rotroff.  Kate has 18 years experience as a director. She has spent the last few weeks learning about the Westbrook community by meeting with various community groups.  A familiar face, Linda Lampron, will continue as administrative assistant for the program.  She is based in room 420 at the Westbrook Regional Vocational Center.

This year the focus will be in four areas:  providing multiple levels of instruction for Westbrook’s growing population of English Language Learners, supporting high school completion for adults who did not graduate from high school, offering vocational training that leads to high wage, high demand jobs and preparation for college.

Registration for English Language Learners will be held on September 6th from 9:00 am– 11:30am and on September 8 from 12:30pm until 3:00pm in room B-9 at the community center (second door to the left when you enter through the main entrance.)

Students wishing to register for HiSET preparation should call the adult education office at 854-0826 for an appointment.  All classes begin the week of September 18, 2017.

Technical training through Westbrook Regional Vocational Center and college transition classes will begin in January.

Kate is excited by the work ahead.  She hopes to draw on both her adult education and previous experience to get the job done.  Before becoming director in Gorham, Kate worked for eleven years as an education specialist at Maine Medical Center.  She was responsible for training Special Education teachers how to develop and support work opportunities for students who had disabilities.  She worked with schools in Aroostook, Washington, Lincoln and Cumberland Counties (including Westbrook).  She also worked for the City of Portland as a Senior Human Services Counselor at the Youth Opportunities office.  She has had a variety other, more unusual, experiences including Maine State Blueberry Inspector, para-mutual teller, short order cook, and license horse groom.  She learned to drive a front-end loader and a dump truck when her then 9-year-old son said, “Girls can’t do that.”
